Flood Insurance: NFIP and Private Options

Understanding flood insurance through NFIP and private insurers.

Do You Need Flood Insurance?

Standard homeowners insurance does NOT cover flood damage. If your home is in a FEMA-designated flood zone and you have a federally backed mortgage, flood insurance is required. Even outside flood zones, about 25% of flood claims come from low-to-moderate risk areas.

NFIP vs Private Flood Insurance

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) provides up to $250,000 for building coverage and $100,000 for contents. Private flood insurance may offer higher limits and additional coverage options at competitive prices.

What Flood Insurance Covers

Structural damage from rising water, sewer backup from flooding, debris removal, and some appliances. It does NOT cover: temporary housing costs, vehicles, landscaping, or moisture/mildew damage not directly from flooding.
